Restoration - Al's Analysis

6/1/2015

This week I'm doing a restoration on a 1919 Gibson L1. There are multiple top cracks and the center of the top (just below the bridge placement) has collapsed due to years of stress supporting the bridge.

I removed the back with heat and a palette knife.  The linings will have to be replaced because of the chipping from the palette knife and the old dried up glue that has separated the linings from the sides. The vertical braces will have to be removed as well because they have collapsed over time with the top.  Next, I will repair the cracks in the top, make new braces, (an X-brace which will give more strength), replace the linings, then realign and glue the back to it's original shape. I will show pics of the finished insides next time.

My wood working skills don't stop at the shop. On my day off, I mounted a new mail box at the house. Ok, you caught me, it's metal. The mailman will leave me a dark  chocolate raisin cluster when he see's this. It's the deal we have. Till next time! - Al
